“The becoming of an image starts querying the appearances and drawing traces“¹
There’s a beautiful moment, in Sexus², where Henry [Miller] entered a church in Naples, through his memories, and he looked at a big and round bottom of a kneeled woman who is praying pointed towards a weary martyr, painted on the wall during the act of climbing a hill.
The reality of Henry becomes a collage: he’s looking at a woman who’s looking at a martyr who’s climbing, coming alive. The different times, the present of Henry and his memories’ time get mixed up, while a young H., a woman and a painted figure turn to observed objects in the juncture.
“Whenever two things exist side by side, there is an uncommunicable tension between them” wrote Jiri Kolar, about photomontages already existing in the reality.

Henry [Miller] raggiunge con la memoria Napoli ed entra in un’enorme cattedrale tipicamente italiana, arredata secondo il gusto peggiore, con tutti i necessari ghingheri cattolici. Dentro alla chiesa si rivede fissare il sedere di una donna mentre lei, genuflessa e a mani giunte, adora un martire che si arrampica a fatica su per un’altura.²
La realtà di Henry Miller in Sexus si fa fotomontaggio: lui guarda una donna che a sua volta guarda un dipinto in cui un santo ritratto nell’atto di arrampicarsi, prende vita propria. Gli stessi tempi, il presente di H. assorto e il passato del ricordo, si mescolano assieme, mentre una donna reale e un martire dipinto si ritrovano oggetti osservati nel contingente.
“Ovunque vi siano anche solo due cose una vicino all’altra, esiste tra loro una tensione inseparabile” scrive Jiri Kolar riguardo i fotomontaggi già esistenti nella realtà.
